Matter Painting

Matter Painting emerged prominently in the mid-20th century, particularly after World War II, as artists began to challenge traditional notions of painting. Influenced by movements such as Art Informel, Tachisme, and Abstract Expressionism, artists incorporated materials like sand, plaster, ash, textiles, and found objects into paint to emphasize texture, gesture, and raw physicality.
