More infoFederico “Fred” Carasso (1899–1969) was an Italian-Dutch sculptor and activist. Fleeing Mussolini’s Italy in 1922, he settled in the Netherlands, joining Amsterdam’s left-wing artistic circles. Initially a woodcarver, he later dedicated himself to sculpture, creating expressive, often abstract works in wood, stone, and bronze. His art, marked by powerful human figures, blended figurative and abstract elements, earning critical acclaim. Post-war, his work reflected ideals of freedom and justice. He also promoted modern Italian art in the Netherlands through writing and organizing exhibitions. Carasso won the Prix de Rome (1952) and the Jacob Hartog Prize (1957). His monumental Zij hielden koers (1965) in Rotterdam symbolizes Dutch wartime resilience. Known for his modesty and craftsmanship, Carasso’s legacy bridges Italian modernism and Dutch art.
