About: The bird sculptures by Theresia van der Pant represent highlights of her oeuvre, especially the birds she increasingly abstracted in her search for essence. One of these birds was the mythological Phoenix. According to Greek mythology, the Phoenix was a divine being capable of rising again and again from its own ashes. In 1987, Van der Pant created a large version measuring approximately 50 cm in height. She depicted rebirth through large, abstracted wings, and fire through a golden-orange patina applied to the rougher areas of the sculpture. In 1994, she made a smaller variant measuring 21 cm: Small Phoenix.
